Where or when (Bryan Ferry)

About the artist: Bryan Ferry (1945) is a British singer and songwriter. He was the lead singer and the face of the alternative rock band Roxy Music between 1972 and 1982. During that time he already recorded a few solo albums, and he continued to so after the band split up. In total he released sixteen studio albums. Bryan Ferry currently has two songs in my list of about 200 best pop/rock songs of all time.

About the song: a track from the 1999 album As time goes by. For this album Ferry took well-known favourites from the thirties and forties and gives them an elegant, intimate and all in all rather neo-classical treatment. The absolute highlight is his take on the Rogers and Hart song Where or when, which originally dates from the thirties. That the melody and the text of this captivating love song are outstanding is no surprise, but the new version is unbelievably touching. Ferry's voice in combination with the eerie sound of the ondes martenot makes this a modern classic indeed. Run time 3:19.
