Love of my life (Queen)
About the band: Queen are a British rock band formed in 1970. Their music is an eclectic mix of progressive rock, hard rock, heavy metal, arena rock and pop rock. They were huge in the seventies and eighties, but could not overcome the death of their charismatic lead singer Freddie Mercury in 1991. They released fifteen studio albums. Estimates of Queen's record sales range from 170 million to 300 million records, making them one of the world's best-selling music artists. Queen currently have three songs in my list of about 200 best pop/rock songs of all time (and one as a part of a cooperation).
About the song: Queen's best album is without doubt 1975's A night at the opera, which contained the monster hit Bohemian rhapsody, a song that I rate just one tier lower than the current list. One of their lesser-known gems is the track Love of my life. A deceptively simple song, set over almost too romantic harp chords. Freddie Mercury pulls it off, and manages not to let it become tacky. And while on the surface it appears as though he is singing a love song, closer inspection to the lyrics show that it could easily be a tale of heartbreak. Listening to this song again makes you realise once more how much the pop/rock scene has lost with his untimely death. Run time 3:39.
