San Jacinto - live (Peter Gabriel)

About the artist: Peter Gabriel (1950) is a British singer, songwriter, musician, record producer and activist. He rose to fame as the original lead singer of the progressive rock band Genesis. After leaving Genesis in 1975, he launched a very successful solo career, with so far 13 studio albums. Peter Gabriel currently has eight songs in my list of about 200 best pop/rock songs of all time (and one as a part of a duo).

About the song: This was originally a track from the fourth Peter Gabriel album, released in 1982. As good as that version is (it would definitely have made this list), this is one of very few exceptions where I prefer a live version - the one found on my favourite live album, the magnificent Peter Gabriel Plays Live from 1983. San Jacinto is about the continuous threat to the native American culture, where many try to become what the 'white man' thinks they should be like. Only a few 'hold the line', and gather their mystical forces to maintain their own cultural identity. Run tim: 8:27.
