Red skies over paradise (Fischer-Z)
About the band: Fischer-Z are a British rock group formed in 1976, and the main creative project of singer, guitarist and poet John Watts. They released twelve studio albums, of which the first three were reasonably successful. Fischer Z currently have one song in my list of about 200 best pop/rock songs of all time.
About the song: Fischer-Z's masterpiece their 1981 concept album Red skies over paradise, with the main theme of nuclear war and total destruction. The title song, Red skies over paradise (a Brighton dream) describes how England is destroyed in a nuclear attack; the biting commentary "Down in their bunkers under the sea, men pressing buttons don't care about me" is particularly impressive. The subject unfortunately will never be completely outdated, and the song is as strong as ever. It's a pity that this group never got the recognition they deserved. Run time 4:37.
