Northern lights (Renaissance)

About the band: Renaissance are a British progressive rock band with a unique sound, combining a female lead vocal with a fusion of classical, folk, rock, and jazz influences. They recorded 13 studio albums. Renaissance currently have one song in my list of about 200 best pop/rock songs of all time.

About the song: although their best album is the 1975 Scheherazade and other stories, their best song comes from the 1978 album A song for all seasons. Northern lights was a surprise top ten hit in the UK. Lead singer Annie Haslam creates something special, helped by an extraordinarily fine melody. Beware though of their remake from the eighties (included in the compilation CD Songs from Renaissance days), which is decidedly inferior. Run time 4:07.
