Promises (Cranberries)

About the band: The Cranberries were an Irish rock band, formed in 1989 with Dolores O'Riordan as the charismatic lead singer and face of the group. Her sudden death in 2018 resulted in the end of the band, after eight studio albums. Their total sales are between over 40 and near 50 million albums worldwide, making them one of the best-selling alternative acts of the nineties. The Cranberries currently have two songs in my list of about 200 best pop/rock songs of all time.

About the song: after a time-out of several years, The Cranberries returned stronger than ever in 1999 with the album Bury the hatchet, which contains the absolute highlight Promises. Released as a single, it was to be their last UK top20 hit for the time being. The song effectively deals with breaking and broken relationships: "Oh, all the promises we made, all the meaningless and empty words". Musically speaking, it goes on where their mot famous song Zombie stopped, with a vengeance. Run time 5:27.
