Space oddity (David Bowie)

About the artist: David Bowie (1947 - 2016) was a British singer-songwriter, whose career stretched over six decades. He is generally recognized as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, affecting subjects as diverse as fashion and classical music. He released dozens of studio albums, many of which were bestsellers. David Bowie currently has three songs in my list of about 200 best pop/rock songs of all time (and one as a part of a cooperation).

About the song: Bowie's first hit single Space Oddity, a track from the 1969 eponymous album, has long been associated with the first ever Apollo moon landing, with which its 1969 release coincided. In fact, it is hard to think of a song less appropriate to such a venture, as in Bowie's song astronaut Major Tom switches off all communications with earth and prepares to spend eternity floating around in his tin can. Bowie himself has said that the inspiration actually was the Kubrick movie 2001-A Space Odyssey and "a silly flirtation with smack". Run time 5:15.
