About the artist: Janis Ian (1951) is an American singer-songwriter who was most commercially successful in the 1960s and 1970s. She released 22 studio albums, but was never able to repeat her early successes. Janis Ian currently has three songs in my list of about 200 best pop/rock songs of all time.
About the song: Stars is the title song of her 1974 album, and is one of her greatest efforts. The melody is simple, but beautiful, the instrumentation likewise and the lyrics simply magnificent: just quoting a few lines cannot do them justice. It deals autobiographically with the confusing experience of becoming a celebrity, the pitfalls of stardom, a clear reference to her own experience of the Society's Child days. The more you hear it, the more you appreciate it. Well, at least I do. Run time 7:12.
