Bubbling under: If you could read my mind (Gordon Lightfoot)

Canadian folk singer/song writer Gordon Lightfoot (image credit) may lack the biting criticism of compatriot Leonard Cohen, but his smooth voice and lovely melodies are ample compensation. Undoubtedly his finest hour is the 1970 ballad If you could read my mind, an American top5 hit. The lyrics are particularly fine, containing some unexpected twists on the regular love story like "If I could read your mind love, what a tale your thoughts could tell, just like a paperback novel, the kind that drugstores sell. When you reach the part where the heartaches come, the hero would be me - but heroes often fail, and you won't read that book again because the ending's just too hard to take....."
