4. Kayleigh (Marillion)

In many respects, Marillion (image credit) filled the gap that Genesis left in the symphonic rock scene when they went for commercial pop/rock following the departure of Gabriel and Hackett. Although many of their albums are great, that sparkle which marked the mid-seventies Genesis albums never quite appeared in Marillions work though, even in their best albums like Script for a jesters tear and Misplaced childhood. On the other hand, that latter album did produce the song which is a strong contender for the title 'best international hit single ever'. The 1985 hit Kayleigh is the ultimate rock love song. Strong melody, perfect instrumentation, Fish' awesome vocals, and good lyrics to boot.

Other songs by this act that would have qualified: Grendel.
