18. Where or when (Bryan Ferry)

The 1999 album As time goes by, the first Bryan Ferry (image credit) album in many years, is incredibly beautiful. Ferry took well-known favourites from the thirties and forties and gave them an elegant, intimate and all in all rather neo-classical treatment. The absolute highlight (just edging out I'm in the mood for love) is his take on the Rogers and Hart song Where or when, which originally dates from the thirties. That the melody and the text of this captivating love song are outstanding is no surprise, but the new version is unbelievably touching. Ferry's voice in combination with the eerie sound of the ondes martenot makes this a modern classic indeed.

Other songs by this act that would have qualified: I'm in the mood for love.
