28. Silent lucidity (Queensryche)

Seattle-based band Queensryche (image credit) came to prominence in the metal glory days of the eighties. With all the later hype around prog metal gods Dream Theater, it is easy to forget that they hardly invented that genre - in fact, Queensryche could claim to have done so, especially with their stunning 1988 album Operation: Mindcrime. Two years later they released the album that made their name outside the metal fan base. Empire managed to strike a chord with a broader audience, helped to a large extent by a number of hit singles and successful MTV clips. One of these was the gorgeous ballad Silent lucidity, which in 2005 made a belated entry in my list of all-time favourites.

Other songs by this act that would have qualified: not applicable.
