32. Song to the siren (This Mortal Coil)

This Mortal Coil is the brainchild of the independent label 4AD's president, Ivo Watts. It is not really a band, but more a way for Watts to explore different musical territory. The first album from 1984, It'll end in tears, made an excellent start to this project, bringing together artists like Lisa Gerrard (Dead can Dance), Howard Devoto and Liz Fraser/Robin Guthrie (Cocteau Twins). The absolute highlight of the album is the cover of Song to the siren, a Tim Buckley composition, which takes on a totally new dimension. The peculiar voice of Liz Fraser (image credit), set over a fascinatingly strange instrumental arrangement, makes for a unique experience. There is no song I know that even comes close to sounding like this one.

Other songs by this act that would have qualified: not applicable.
