40. Old and wise (Alan Parsons Project)

In the mid seventies, producer Alan Parsons (who incidentally inter alia produced the Pink Floyd masterpiece The dark side of the moon) first gathered some friends to record an Edgar Allan Poe inspired concept album (Tales of mystery and imagination) under the name The Alan Parsons Project (image credit). Many albums with different themes followed, consistently of high, be it slightly slick, quality. The highlight in their repertoire is the gorgeous ballad Old and wise from the 1982 album Eye in the sky, with Colin Blunstone as the singer. It is a beautiful song about growing old, combining both the threat and the promise that it will turn out to be alright in the end.

Other songs by this act that would have qualified: The eagle will rise again.
