61. Hallelujah (Jeff Buckley)

Jeff Buckley, the son of Tim Buckley, shared his father's fate of a far too early death - he drowned at the age of 30. His 1994 debut album Grace, which I missed the first time around, and only discovered a few years ago, is now widely recognized as a classic, not in the least because of his phenomenal cover of the Leonard Cohen 1985 song Hallelujah. Starting intriguingly with the sound of a candle being blown out, this ballad unfolds magnificently as Buckley makes the most of the brilliant lyrics.

Other songs by this act that would have qualified: not applicable.
