57. Promises (Cranberries)

After a time-out of several years, the Irish band The Cranberries (image credit) returned stronger than ever in 1999 with the album Bury the hatchet, which contains great songs like Shattered and the absolute highlight of the album: the dynamic Promises. The latter is easily their best song ever. Released as a single, it was to be their last UK top20 hit for the time being. The song effectively deals with breaking and broken relationships: "Oh, all the promises we made, all the meaningless and empty words". Musically speaking, it goes on where Zombie stopped, with a vengeance.

Other songs by this act that would have qualified: Zombie.
