56. Give up your guns (Buoys)

World-wide, the Buoys (image credit) are probably most (in)famous for their cannibalistic USA top20 hit Timothy, which is frequently mentioned in overviews of awful pop songs. This is a shame as it clouds the fact that this relatively short-lived band produced some really good music, with an absolute peak in the 1971 song Give up your guns, which was a minor hit in America. For some reason, this story song is appreciated much more in Holland than elsewhere: it featured regularly in the all time top100 organized yearly by a Dutch radio station in the seventies, peaking at 22 in both 1974 and 1975, and getting a last entry as late as 1996. Its desperado motive ("Shooting here or hanging there - and either way I lose") rather remarkably foreshadows later Eagles songs.

Other songs by this act that would have qualified: not applicable.
