66. The ministry of lost souls (Dream Theater)

The American progressive metal band Dream Theater (image credit) took 18 years and 9 studio albums to come up with their best song ever. The epic 15 minutes symphonic ballad The ministry of lost souls, widely seen as the best track of their ninth studio album Systematic chaos from 2007, combines beautiful singing and stunning solo's for guitar and keyboards in a remarkable story about a girl who has been saved from drowning - only to see the man who saved her drown in her place. The whole track reminds me of their best album, Scenes from a memory.

Other songs by this act that would have qualified: not applicable.
