98. Red skies over paradise (Fischer Z)

The masterpiece of the regrettably short-lived ensemble Fischer-Z (image credit) is their third album Red skies over paradise from 1981, with the main theme of nuclear war and total destruction. The title song describes how England is destroyed in a nuclear attack; the biting commentary "Down in their bunkers under the sea, men pressing buttons don't care about me" is particularly impressive - and poignant for my generation who lived through that threatening period. Over 25 years later, the subject may be outdated, but the song is as strong as ever. It's a pity that this group never got the recognition they deserved.

Other songs by this act that would have qualified: not applicable.
