97. Northern lights (Renaissance)

The British band Renaissance (image credit) had a string of reasonably successful albums in the seventies with their symphonic folk-rock. Probably their best album is Scheherazade and other stories. The later album A song for all seasons from 1978 includes their best song ever, the haunting Northern lights, which was a surprise top ten hit in the UK. Lead singer Annie Haslam creates something special, helped by an extraordinarily fine melody. Beware though of their remake from the eighties (included in the compilation CD Songs from Renaissance days), which is decidedly inferior.

Other songs by this act that would have qualified: not applicable.
